Heartworms and Prevention

Treating heartworm disease in dogs can be costly and time consuming, and any damage caused may be permanent. There is no approved heartworm treatment for cats, yet just one adult heartworm can be enough to result in death. Fortunately, heartworm disease is easy to prevent. Here at Schmitt’s Animal Hospital we recommend annual heartworm testing for dogs along with a monthly heartworm preventative year-round. Cats should also be on a monthly preventative all twelve months of the year; yes, even those that are strictly indoors. We offer a variety of different preventatives to suit both yours and your pet’s needs. We stand behind the products that we prescribe and when you purchase your preventatives from your veterinarian, the product is backed by the manufacturers as well.
